Biking Rules is a new 'Street Code' for NYC bicyclists.
The Biking Rules follow the simple principle that our responsibility to other people on the street increases relative to our potential to cause harm.
With Biking Rules, NYC bicyclists are taking the lead to create safer, saner streets.
Some tips to keep in mind for a safe and fun ride...
Remember, this tour is not a race
Always yield to pedestrians on shared paths and walkers in the crosswalk
Be a bicycling ambassador -- Eye-contact, smile and courtesy really work!
Follow all NYC Traffic Laws -- For information about NYC Traffic Laws, visit BikingRules.org
Wear a helmet (required for children age 14 and under)
Slow down in crowded areas
Signal all turns and stops with an outstretched arm to the left or right
Be verbal -- Say "on your right" or "on your left" before passing
Ride predictably and don’t make sudden stops!
Pavement conditions vary -- Watch for potholes, broken pavement, glass and sunken manhole covers
(pointing out pavement problems to fellow riders is appreciated by all)
Slow down and stay in control of your bike, especially on big downhill sections
Be especially alert when approaching intersections from bike paths
Respect your environment and your neighbors -- dispose of your trash properly or take it with you
Don't pass riders on bridges
Transportation Alternatives reserves the right to ask anyone being reckless or unsafe to surrender his or her bib and leave the ride
Ride three feet from the curb and parked cars (especially important on commercial streets) --
Remember, the law states that you have the right to a full traffic lane
Obey traffic lights and stops signs, and always ride with traffic --
Under NY State law, bicycles are considered vehicles and are subject to the same rules (and penalties) as cars
On one-way streets without a bike lane, ride on the left to avoid buses -- On two way streets, stay to the right

The NYC Department of Parks and Recreation reminds you of the following rules for riding in NYC Parks:
Pedestrians always have the right of way
Bicycling is not permitted on the park paths (you must dismount to enter the rest stop)
In Central and Prospect parks, bicyclists must travel in a counter-clockwise direction and obey all traffic signals and speed limits
Since park roads will be closed to car traffic on the day of the NYC Century Bike Tour, please use the traffic lanes
(the recreation lane on the left side of the roadway is for runners and walkers)
Be aware that authorized vehicles use the roads at all times
